Cross-platform play does not by itself prove that progress can be backed up, exported, or restored on another device. Before investing time in a game, ask which account owns the save, which platforms synchronize it, whether an active subscription is required, and what happens when local and cloud copies disagree.

Is cross-save actually supported?

Ask the publisher to identify supported platform pairs and the exact data that moves: campaign progress, characters, inventory, settings, user-created content, trophies, and purchases may follow different rules. Confirm whether progress is tied to a console account, a publisher account, or both. Avoid assuming that cross-play matchmaking includes cross-progression.

PlayStation's cloud-storage documentation shows that PS5 and PS4 saved data can be uploaded and downloaded through PlayStation Plus. It also explains that PS5 automatic synchronization depends on the relevant settings, and that PS4 data may need a manual download to PS5 storage. See PlayStation Plus cloud storage. Sony's broader PS5 support page separately distinguishes system transfer and storage tasks. These platform features do not promise that every third-party title moves progress to a different ecosystem.

Can the player verify the latest copy?

Ask whether the interface shows a timestamp, sync status, device source, or conflict warning. On PS5, Sony documents a View Sync Status option and manual upload or download controls. Record the result before changing consoles or reinstalling a title. If a local and cloud save differ, stop and verify which one is newer before overwriting either copy.

What does restore mean?

Clarify whether recovery can restore only the latest synchronized state or an earlier version. Ask whether deleted characters, corrupted saves, and publisher-server progress can be recovered separately. Determine whether support can restore a single title without affecting other games. Never delete a local copy just to test cloud recovery unless the save is separately protected and the risk is understood.

How are conflicts handled?

Microsoft's PlayFab Game Saves documentation describes cross-device cloud synchronization, explicit upload and download flows, save-conflict handling, and active-device scenarios. It also notes that other platforms may need an upload to finish before exit for data to reach the cloud. See PlayFab Game Saves. This is developer guidance, so use it to form questions rather than claiming that every game implements those safeguards.

What access and subscription are required?

Ask whether cloud storage requires a paid plan, online connection, family permission, or the same signed-in account. Sony says PlayStation Plus membership is required for its cloud storage and provides capacity and file-count limits. Check the current plan and region rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Test before a major move

Use a non-critical save or a title with clear recovery instructions. Record the account, platform, last-save time, sync status, and result after downloading on a second supported device. Check that progress, settings, and entitlements match, then close the game normally and allow final upload to complete.

A useful answer separates gameplay compatibility from data portability. Choose a setup only after the game's publisher and platform documentation explain sync scope, conflicts, restore boundaries, account requirements, and a safe test path.
