Cross-platform play depends on more than a game installation. A publisher account, console or storefront accounts, cloud progress, purchases, subscriptions, and game-specific linking rules may all be involved. Recovery begins by identifying which account owns the progress before anyone changes a link.
Build an account map
For each game, record the publisher account, every linked platform account, display names, nonsecret account IDs, recovery email owner, multifactor-authentication method, subscription requirements, and the devices normally used. Do not store passwords or recovery codes in the map. Keep them in an approved credential system.
Also record what matters to the player: progression, inventory, characters, purchases, virtual currency, entitlements, friends, and competitive rank. Take dated screenshots of the account-link page and representative in-game progress. A screenshot is evidence for support, not a substitute for a vendor backup.
Identify the authoritative account
The account holding progress can differ by game. Epic says Fortnite and Fall Guys progress is stored on the Epic Games account, while Rocket League progress is stored on the external platform account. Epic recommends signing in to each Epic account before making changes to find the one with the progress you want to keep. It also says progress from two Epic accounts cannot be merged and unlinking does not move progress between Epic accounts. Write the answer for each game rather than assuming a universal rule. If ownership is uncertain, stop and use official support before changing links. Record the support case number and the exact accounts discussed.
Treat unlinking as a risky change
Epic discourages unlinking a console account. Its documentation says unlinking can remove console access to Fortnite and Fall Guys progress and purchases even though that data remains in the Epic account. It also warns that launching after unlinking can create a new empty Epic account, and that unlinking the progress-holding platform account can affect Rocket League inventory and experience access. Link restrictions can also make experimentation expensive. Epic says the restriction that blocks linking a different account of the same platform type can be removed only once every 365 days, and it tells users to verify the correct platform account before confirming. For those reasons, a recovery plan should never say "unlink and try again" as a generic first step. Make a verified account map first, preserve evidence, and follow the current official instructions for the specific game and platform.
Verify normal operation before an incident
Periodically sign in on each supported device without changing account links. Confirm the expected display name, progression, entitlements, inventory, and multiplayer access. Record differences caused by platform-specific currency or content rules. Confirm that the recovery email is still reachable and that multifactor authentication works, but do not weaken security merely to simplify testing.
Respond to a sync or access failure
Stop linking, unlinking, account creation, and new purchases until the account map is checked. Record the game, platform, error, visible display name, account ID, last successful session, and what progress is missing. Confirm whether the device signed into a different publisher or platform account. Check the vendor's service status and current linking guidance.
If the expected progress is visible on one device, preserve that evidence and avoid making changes there. Contact official support from the verified account owner. After recovery, verify progress and entitlements on each device before resuming purchases. Update the account map with the cause and the supported resolution.
The safest recovery plan protects the account relationship that already holds the data. It does not gamble that a new link will reconstruct progress that the vendor says cannot be merged or moved.
