A game-save rollback test should never risk the only copy of valuable progress. Use a new profile, a disposable save slot, or a game with no important progress. Confirm that the exact game and platform support the backup method you intend to test. Record the account without its password, game and build, device, save-slot name, checkpoint, local time and time zone, cloud-sync setting, and every place a copy may exist.

Create recognizable test progress

Make a small checkpoint that is easy to identify, such as reaching a named location or creating a uniquely named test profile. Exit the game normally and wait for the platform's synchronization to finish. Steam says supported files synchronize before and after sessions, and files changed during a session are uploaded after the game exits: https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/features/cloud?l=english. Steam Cloud can be disabled globally or per game, and cross-platform behavior depends on the game's configuration, so verify the displayed setting instead of assuming every save is in the cloud.

Capture the local and cloud timestamps and the visible progress. If the platform exposes a log, retain the relevant observation; Steam identifies `cloud_log.txt` in the Steam logs directory for cloud activity. Do not edit or rename game files unless the game's own support instructions explicitly allow it.

Simulate loss without deleting the source

Use a second supported device or a fresh disposable profile to test download, or create a second test checkpoint only after the first copy is confirmed. Do not delete the known-good save to prove recovery. Steam Support says its conflict window appears when local and cloud files differ and automatic selection is impossible; it advises comparing the shown dates and times with actual play behavior before choosing: https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/68D2-35AB-09A9-7678. Record which version is expected and why before selecting it. If the evidence is ambiguous, stop rather than guess.

On PlayStation 5, Sony documents per-game sync status plus manual upload and download controls for PlayStation Plus cloud storage: https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/subscriptions/ps5-ps-plus-cloud-storage/. Its instructions distinguish PS5 automatic synchronization from PS4 saved-data behavior on a PS5, so follow the menu and rules for the actual game type. Record the direction of transfer and the before-and-after status.

Verify and close the drill

Launch the disposable copy and verify the named checkpoint, character or profile, location, settings, and any test inventory. Avoid creating substantial new progress. Exit normally, confirm the next synchronization, and check that the original known-good copy was not lost. Record elapsed time, any subscription requirement, device limitation, unsynchronized state, or manual step.

A passed drill validates one game, account, platform, and save method. It does not prove that another title stores the same files or supports the same rollback. Repeat the test after a platform migration or major game update, and pause for official support when the platform reports a conflict that cannot be tied to known progress.
