When play between platforms stops working, the visible error may hide several separate systems: the game publisher account, console account, platform privacy settings, subscriptions, network status, and the particular game's rules. The safest investigation begins with a record of the current account relationships, not with unlinking accounts.

Capture a known-good account map

Record the game title and version, publisher account display name and nonsecret identifier, each platform account, devices, region, family or child-account status, multiplayer subscription, and the date cross-device play last worked. Add screenshots of linked-account pages and representative progression. Keep passwords and recovery codes in an approved credential manager, not in the incident notes.

Progress ownership is game-specific. Epic says Fortnite and Fall Guys progress is stored on the Epic account, while Rocket League progress is stored on the external platform account. It also says progress from two Epic accounts cannot be merged and unlinking does not move progress between Epic accounts. That is why the log should name the account that actually holds the expected inventory or progress before any relationship is changed.

Record the failure as a testable case

Write the exact time with time zone, game mode, host platform, joining platform, player names, error text, matchmaking region, network type, and whether same-platform multiplayer works. Check official service-status pages and record the result. Separate inability to join a lobby from missing progress, missing purchases, voice-chat restrictions, or a sign-in failure; they have different likely causes.

The change log should have one row per action: time, operator, platform, old state, new state, reason, expected result, actual result, and reversal method. Include privacy-setting edits, family-setting edits, game updates, platform updates, account-link changes, subscription changes, and network changes.

PlayStation notes that account-linking behavior for its PC games can vary by title. Source: https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/playstation-gaming-on-pc/ That limitation supports checking the current support page for the exact game rather than assuming one platform-wide procedure.

Test from least destructive to most restrictive

First verify that both players are using the correct accounts and current game versions. Confirm that cross-play is enabled inside the game when the title provides that setting. Check platform privacy or family controls with the account owner. Test an ordinary same-platform session, then a cross-device invitation, while changing only one condition at a time. Record each result.

Do not start by unlinking. Epic warns that unlinking a console account can remove console access to Fortnite and Fall Guys progress and purchases, even though the data remains on the Epic account. It also warns that launching afterward can create a new empty Epic account, and that Rocket League access can be affected when the progress-holding platform account is removed. Epic also says the restriction on linking a different account of the same platform type can be removed only once every 365 days. Source: https://www.epicgames.com/help/c-45487929/c-38854402/epic-games-a24748918

Escalate with evidence

If the correct account and settings are confirmed but the issue remains, stop changes and contact the game's official support channel. Provide the game, platforms, account identifiers, timestamps, exact error, service-status result, and the change log. Do not send passwords or multifactor codes.

After a resolution, verify multiplayer access and progression on every affected device before making purchases. Close the entry with the confirmed cause, supported correction, and final account map. If the cause remains uncertain, say so. A precise record is more useful than a confident guess, especially when an account relationship controls years of progress.
