Cross-platform play is not one switch that works the same way in every game. A new user may need a platform account, a publisher account, game-specific cross-play settings, compatible editions, online-service access, and permission to communicate with people on other networks. Prepare those pieces in a controlled order so the user does not accidentally link the wrong identity or discover a restriction after everyone else is waiting.
Confirm the exact game and platforms
Start with the title, edition, platform, and current game version for every participant. Look up the game's own support page rather than assuming that “cross-play” includes every device or mode. A game may support cross-platform matchmaking but not cross-platform parties, shared purchases, ranked modes, or cross-progression. For example, PlayStation's support page for MLB The Show 26 says all supported consoles can cross-play, while purchase-related details still depend on the platform and account (PlayStation Support). Treat that as information about that title, not a promise about another game.
Write a one-line compatibility result: “Game version X, mode Y, platforms A and B, cross-play supported as of date Z.” Add the source link and date checked. If a participant uses an older console generation or a different regional edition, verify that combination separately.
Identify every account before linking
List the platform sign-in, the publisher or game account, the display name friends will search, and the recovery owner. Do not record passwords or recovery codes. Ask the user to sign out of unrelated browser sessions before linking and verify the email or account ID shown on the confirmation screen. Epic's account support specifically tells users to sign out first if necessary so they do not act from the wrong account, then sign in through the relevant platform icon to inspect linked accounts (Epic Games Account Support).
Do not unlink an existing console account merely to make setup look cleaner. Epic warns that unlinking a console account from an automatically created Epic account can remove access to game data from that console (Epic Games Account Support). If the visible account is unexpected, stop, identify where progress and purchases live, and use the publisher's recovery process. A new-user handoff should preserve ownership, not experiment with it.
Check game and family permissions
Open the game's cross-play or gameplay privacy setting and record its state. Fortnite, for example, places its cross-play option under Settings, Account, and Gameplay Privacy on consoles (Epic Games Fortnite Support). The location and ability to disable cross-play differ by platform, so do not turn that path into universal instructions.
If the user is a child or is managed by a family account, have the family manager review multiplayer, cross-network communication, friend requests, voice chat, text chat, and user-generated content. Obtain any required consent through the official account flow. Epic's technical overview notes that account linking can return a restricted result when parental consent has not been obtained (Epic Online Services). Do not bypass a restriction by substituting an adult account.
Prepare the social path
Confirm which identity the game uses for invitations. Some games use a publisher-wide friends list rather than the console friends list. Epic's Fortnite instructions tell players to add the other person's Epic display name and wait for the request to be accepted before the friend appears in the list. Record the exact display name, but avoid publishing it or treating it as a login credential.
Create a small test party with one known person. Test sending, receiving, accepting, joining, leaving, muting, and blocking. Then start the intended game mode and confirm that both players see the same lobby and version. If voice or text chat is needed, test it separately; successful matchmaking does not prove communications permissions are correct.
Check dependencies and limitations
Confirm each device is online, updated, and signed into the intended account. Check whether the game or platform requires a paid online-service subscription for the planned mode. Verify regional, age, and competitive-mode restrictions. If cross-progression matters, record what actually synchronizes: rank, inventory, currency, settings, saves, or nothing. Purchases and platform wallets often remain platform-specific, so test readback rather than assuming every entitlement follows the linked account.
Leave a recoverable handoff
The handoff should contain the game and version, supported platform pair, linked-account names, family-settings owner, cross-play setting location, invite identity, tested mode, test date, and support links. Record unresolved limitations separately. The setup is ready only when the user can sign in, locate the correct friend, join the intended mode, and explain whom to contact before any unlinking or recovery action. Review the handoff after a major game update because compatibility and menus can change.
