Cross-platform play depends on more than a game setting. Platform accounts, publisher accounts, privacy controls, subscriptions, game versions, regions, and friend identities can all affect whether players connect. An annual review should map those dependencies without unlinking accounts or changing paid services casually.
1. Define the intended group
List each player, device family, platform account, publisher account, display name, and game edition. Record which combinations are expected to play together and which person owns each account. Avoid storing passwords, recovery codes, birth dates, or payment details. The checklist needs identity mapping, not secrets.
2. Confirm linked accounts
Use the publisher's account page to view current platform links. Epic documents that its Linked accounts page shows the platform accounts connected to an Epic account. Record the observed display names and date. If an account is unfamiliar or inaccessible, stop and use the provider's recovery route rather than guessing which link to remove.
3. Do not unlink as a diagnostic shortcut
Account linking can carry game progress or access. Epic warns that an automatically created console-linked account may contain progress and purchases and says unlinking can cause loss of access to game data from that platform. Capture the current mapping before any owner-approved change and read the game's current linking rules. A stale display name alone is not enough reason to unlink.
4. Review privacy and family controls
Check the game and platform controls for multiplayer, cross-network play, communication, friend requests, and age restrictions. Record the current setting and the responsible adult or account owner. Do not weaken a child account or family restriction simply to make a test pass. If a restriction blocks play, report the observed state and request the appropriate owner decision.
5. Verify editions, updates, and subscriptions
Confirm that all devices run compatible game editions and current supported versions. Record any required platform membership and the renewal owner. Do not assume that a subscription on one household account applies to every profile or platform. Use the platform store and game support page as current evidence.
6. Check friend identity
Display names can differ by platform. Epic notes that changing an Epic display name does not change PlayStation or Xbox names. Record the publisher name and platform name so players know which identity to search for. Test a friend request with an approved account and confirm both sides can identify the sender.
7. Run a controlled session test
Use a private lobby or other low-risk mode. Record the host, joining platform, account, game version, invite route, voice or text setting, and result. Test one pair at a time before a larger group. Capture exact error text without publishing personal identifiers. A successful lobby proves only the combinations tested on that date.
8. Leave a handoff record
Store the review date, account map, privacy state, editions, subscriptions, friend names, successful combinations, failures, and next action. Label untested combinations as unknown. The annual review is useful when a new device or player can follow the record without risky account unlinking.
