Game progress can depend on a console profile, platform account, subscription, local storage, a publisher account, or a game's own servers. A single statement such as “cloud saves are on” is not enough. Build an inventory by game and platform: account name, device, save location, subscription requirement, last known sync time, and whether the game supports a manual export. Record recovery codes and purchase records in a secure account system, not in a public checklist.
Confirm what actually synchronizes
Steam Cloud synchronizes matching game files before and after sessions for games that implement it, can download data to a new computer before launch, and can be disabled globally or per game: https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/features/cloud?l=english. That means a Steam installation does not prove every game is protected. Check the game's cloud status and close it normally so the platform can finish its post-session work.
On PlayStation 5, PlayStation Plus cloud storage can automatically synchronize saved data after a game closes or while the console is in rest mode when the required settings and network access are available. Sony also provides per-game sync status and manual upload or download controls: https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/subscriptions/ps5-ps-plus-cloud-storage/. Record whether the subscription is active and when the latest cloud copy was verified. Do not assume that a recently played game completed synchronization.
Use supported secondary copies
Manual options differ by console generation. Sony documents that PlayStation 4 saved data can be copied by USB, while PlayStation 5 saved data cannot be copied to USB in the same way: https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/transfer-games-saved-data-ps4-ps5/. Use only the platform's supported path. Where a USB or system backup is available, label the device and date, then inspect the backup listing before relying on it. Keep at least one recovery copy separate from the console that could fail.
Test recovery before a high-risk change
Choose a low-risk game or secondary device, verify the local timestamp and in-game progress, then use the documented download or transfer path. Launch the game and confirm the expected save slot appears. Avoid playing beyond the test point until you know which copy is newer, because a sync conflict may require a choice. Record the result and any platform-specific limitation.
Before replacing, transferring, selling, or resetting a console, back up supported data and verify the destination. Sony's transfer and disposal guidance says a reset deletes console settings and information and recommends backing up first: https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/transfer-dispose-console/. Its PlayStation 5 support guidance also warns that formatting a USB drive erases its data and cannot be undone: https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/ps5/. These are destructive steps, so use two independent confirmations—a verified backup and a successful restore or transfer check—before proceeding. Review the inventory after new games, account changes, subscription changes, or hardware upgrades.
