When a character or pointer moves without the intended stick input, first check whether the symptom follows the controller across supported games. Record what moves, in which direction, and whether the behavior appears in a system-level controller test.
Follow the model-specific route
Nintendo's Switch Pro Controller guidance recommends checking updates, calibrating the sticks, and trying another compatible game. It directs persistent problems toward service. Sony documents a different troubleshooting route for DualSense, including a controller reset and a repair-support path for continuing stick issues. Do not apply one manufacturer's button sequence to another device. How to troubleshoot DualSense wireless controller issues
Compare before changing more settings
Write down any custom control mapping and game-specific input options. Try a known, supported configuration and compare it with a second compatible game if available. If the behavior appears only in one game, include that fact in the report rather than declaring a hardware failure immediately.
For example, a useful note says that movement appears during a calibration test and in two games. A less useful note says only that the controller is bad. Keep observations separate from the suspected cause.
Know when to stop experimenting
If the supported calibration or reset does not resolve the problem, use the manufacturer's service process. Avoid opening the controller, applying liquids, or downloading an unofficial repair utility as a routine first step.
This checklist helps collect evidence and choose the proper support route. It cannot determine whether the cause is wear, configuration, a game issue, or another fault, and it does not promise that a software adjustment repairs damaged hardware.
