Review cross-platform play for accessibility by testing the full route from account linking and privacy settings through invites, matchmaking, lobby, communication, gameplay, errors, reconnection, reporting, and exit. A match is not accessible merely because players on two platforms can connect. Every required menu and social interaction must be usable by the players who need it.

Map platforms, accounts, and required steps

List supported consoles, computers, mobile devices, storefront accounts, publisher accounts, subscriptions, regions, game versions, downloadable content, input methods, cross-play settings, parental controls, privacy settings, and communication services. Record which steps occur in the game and which open a platform overlay, browser, QR code, or second device.

Use test accounts and avoid publishing player identifiers or private communications. Check whether a player can understand which account is linked, unlink safely, recover access, and avoid accidentally linking to the wrong profile. Authentication should support password managers or other accessible methods without weakening security.

Test navigation from launch to play

Microsoft's Xbox Accessibility Guidelines cover text, contrast, narration, input, UI, errors, time limits, communication, and related game experiences. Apply relevant checks to main menu, multiplayer selection, account linking, server browser, lobby, team setup, ready state, loading, match, pause, results, and report or block actions.

Test with screen narration, magnification, captions, color alternatives, keyboard, controller remapping, adaptive hardware, and other supported inputs. Focus and selection must remain visible. Status such as ready, connected, muted, platform, leader, and match found must not depend only on color, icon, animation, vibration, or sound.

Review invites, matchmaking, and identity

Send, receive, accept, decline, cancel, and expire invitations across every supported platform pair. Verify accessible names, sender identity, platform context, timeout, and error recovery. Test cross-play enabled and disabled, incompatible versions, full parties, region or age restrictions, blocked users, lost connectivity, and a player joining in progress.

Keep displayed names distinguishable without exposing unnecessary platform account details. Explain why matchmaking is unavailable and identify the setting or requirement to change. Do not trap a player in a platform overlay that cannot be operated with their configured input.

Test communication and safety

Microsoft's communication accessibility guideline says the path to multiplayer communication, its settings, matchmaking, invites, text, voice, speech-to-text, and text-to-speech should be accessible. Test navigation to each feature, not just the final chat box.

Verify captions or speech-to-text where provided, text-to-speech controls, readable chat, speaker identification, volume separation, notification history, mute, block, report, privacy, and communication preferences. Players who cannot use voice should have an effective supported alternative when communication is necessary. Do not assume a platform feature is available or configured the same way everywhere.

Check profanity filters and moderation notices for understandable feedback. Reporting should preserve context without forcing a player to hear, remember, or manually transcribe harmful content. Protect minors and private information according to platform and household controls.

Compare gameplay participation

Test whether platform differences create an accessibility barrier: input matchmaking, aim support, remapping, latency indicators, text size, safe areas, haptics, color cues, captions, pause behavior, and tutorial availability. Document intentional competitive differences separately from defects.

Exercise reconnect, host migration, suspend and resume, controller disconnect, network loss, cross-save load, and version mismatch. Errors need a clear cause and next action. Preserve user settings across reconnect where supported.

Record evidence and retest

Build a matrix of platform pair, account type, region, privacy state, input, assistive feature, journey step, expected result, observed result, evidence, severity, owner, and retest. Include players with disabilities across representative platforms where possible.

The review passes when players can configure cross-play, find and join one another, communicate through accessible supported routes, understand errors, protect themselves, participate in gameplay, and reconnect without an inaccessible detour. Repeat after platform, account, matchmaking, overlay, communication, moderation, or game-version changes.
