Before changing a game-save backup method, keep evidence that identifies the correct progress, its account and device dependencies, the supported transfer route, and a successful restore. A cloud icon or copied folder is not enough. The useful evidence connects an in-game checkpoint to a specific save, timestamp, platform, profile, and tested recovery procedure.

Identify the save and its dependencies

List game title, edition, build, platform, account, profile, save slot, visible checkpoint, playtime, downloadable content, mods, configuration, screenshots, and any publisher account. Record whether progress is stored locally, in a platform cloud, on the publisher's servers, or in several places.

Keep screenshots of recognizable progress and the platform's save-management screen. Record the last correct play session, device clock and time zone, file or slot timestamp, size, and storage location where officially documented. Do not put account passwords, recovery codes, or personal messages in the evidence package.

Preserve platform status and limitations

PlayStation's PS5 storage guidance distinguishes game installation data from saved data. It documents cloud storage for PS5 and PS4 saves with PlayStation Plus, while PS4 saves can also use a USB drive and PS5 saves cannot. Keep the subscription state and exact supported path because a USB drive connected to a console does not imply every save can be copied.

Steam's Cloud documentation says cloud use varies by game, offline play can create conflicts, sync errors should be resolved before launch, and lost cloud data may not be recoverable. Save the game's store-page cloud indication, current sync status, relevant client log location, and developer instructions for local files where available.

Keep the original before changing behavior

Close the game normally and confirm it is no longer writing. Preserve the supported original copy before enabling, disabling, moving, or replacing synchronization. Where ordinary file access is supported, record relative paths, filenames, sizes, modified times, and cryptographic hashes for important files. Never bypass platform protection or decrypt data merely to create evidence.

Keep the unmodified export or backup package read-only. Document the tool and version that created it, options selected, target storage, encryption or account dependence, capacity, and completion message. Verify that the destination contains data rather than trusting an empty folder or successful-looking notification.

Exercise restore and conflict handling

Use a noncritical test save or a duplicate permitted by the game. Restore to a clean supported environment or alternate device. Verify account, edition, downloadable content, in-game checkpoint, settings, playtime, and ability to save again. A successful file copy that the game cannot load is not a successful backup.

Create a controlled conflict only when it cannot endanger valued progress. Record both versions' device, timestamp, size, checkpoint, and the text shown by the chooser. Steam advises using dates, times, and actual play behavior because the service cannot always decide which version is correct. Cancel if uncertain.

Test offline mode, interrupted synchronization, full storage, expired subscription, wrong profile, old device unavailable, and a game without cloud support as applicable. Record exact errors and recovery. Do not repeatedly launch through a known sync warning if doing so can overwrite the desired save.

Document cutover and rollback

Record the final source write, final sync, backup creation, verified restore, change to the new method, unresolved limitations, owner, and acceptance. Keep the previous method available until the new one passes and the platform's retention window is understood.

The evidence set is sufficient when the player can identify the authoritative save, prove its visible progress, explain account and subscription dependencies, resolve a conflict safely, and restore through a supported route. Keep enough for recovery without retaining unrelated personal data or claiming that synchronization alone is an independent backup.
