Voice chat privacy should be configured for each player's own account, age, game, platform, and linked service. Use separate family accounts, restrict who can invite or communicate, review microphone and recording settings, test the result, and teach every player how to mute, block, leave, and report.

Separate accounts before changing settings

Give each family member an individual platform account with the correct birth date and role. Do not share the family manager's login, saved payment access, friends list, or unrestricted communication profile. Record which adult manages child settings and protect that adult account with a strong password, multifactor authentication when available, and a console sign-in code.

PlayStation's parent safety guidance says each child should have a separate child account and lets family managers restrict communication, user-created content, purchases, web access, and play time. It also recommends preventing children from bypassing controls through new users or guest login.

Limit invitations, parties, and profile exposure

Review who may send friend requests, party invitations, text messages, and voice invitations. Start with friends-only or a similarly restricted setting, then expand it only for a clear reason. Check who can see the real name, profile image, online status, current game, friends, gaming history, and shared media.

PlayStation's privacy-settings guide provides profiles ranging from open communication to no chat invitations, plus detailed controls for parties, games, messages, real-name visibility, activity, and shared media. Confirm the current setting rather than relying on a profile name that may have been changed later.

Xbox families can review communication and multiplayer controls through the Xbox Family Settings application, which includes child-account, communication, friend, multiplayer, club, and cross-network settings. Check both the console account and any cross-network service because one control does not necessarily govern another platform.

Review every voice path

List platform parties, in-game chat, team channels, proximity chat, linked Discord or other services, streaming software, and companion applications. For each path, record who can join, whether strangers can speak, whether speech-to-text or moderation is active, and where mute and report controls appear. A platform restriction may not change a separate phone or computer application.

Inspect the physical headset mute switch, controller microphone, console input selection, microphone level, and open-mic threshold. Disable microphones that are not needed. Use push-to-talk when available for shared rooms, and avoid placing a live microphone near names, addresses, schedules, financial conversations, or another person's call.

Check recording and broadcast behavior

Determine whether clips, party recordings, moderation samples, highlights, or live broadcasts can include voice. Tell party members before recording or streaming and respect their platform sharing choice. Do not treat an illuminated broadcast icon as the only notice; explain the audience and whether an archive will remain.

Make a short private test with no personal conversation. Play it back through headphones and check microphone audio, party voices, game chat, background speech, notifications, and displayed account names. Delete the test from the console, linked service, and cloud library when it is no longer needed.

Prepare for unwanted contact

Show each player how to mute an individual, leave a party, block an account, restrict future invitations, preserve a safe amount of evidence, and report conduct through the platform. Do not continue an abusive exchange to collect more material. For a child, involve the responsible adult and follow the platform's safety process. Contact local emergency services when there is an immediate threat.

Review the settings after adding a new game, headset, console, cross-play account, or linked chat service. Recheck child controls as permissions mature. The review is complete when each account has an intentional audience, every voice path is known, recording behavior has been tested, and the player can reach safety tools without assistance.
