A product-page rollback test should protect both the storefront code and the product record. Use an unpublished theme, a draft or test product, and a non-production payment path when one is available. Do not alter a live item's price, inventory, or availability merely to create a drill. Record the product identifier, assigned template, theme name and version, market, currency, active apps, checkpoint time, and the person who can approve publication.
Build two recovery points
First duplicate the current theme. Shopify recommends making a backup copy before customization so changes can be discarded and work can restart from the duplicate: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/themes/managing-themes/duplicating-themes. Shopify also states that a theme download does not include products, collections, menus, pages, blog posts, images, or files from the store's content area. Record the separate product-data export or documented product values needed to recover the catalog side of the page. A theme copy alone is not a full product-page backup.
Create an obvious test change in the unpublished theme, such as alternate explanatory text in a test section, and one harmless catalog change on the test product. Capture the expected title, media, variant, price, availability, template, structured information, and add-to-cart behavior. Keep customer and order data out of the drill.
Exercise the narrowest rollback
If only a theme file changed, inspect its prior version before restoring. Shopify's troubleshooting guidance says the code editor's Timeline can restore an available previous file version, but restoring replaces the entire file; it recommends copying the current contents first: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/themes/theme-support/troubleshooting. When the problem is broader, compare the duplicate theme rather than making several simultaneous code reversions. Restore one layer at a time and record the result.
Use the store activity log to establish sequence. Shopify says the log shows the date, time, and actor for recent actions, including people, apps, and channels: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/shopify-admin/activity-logs. The log is view-only, cannot be exported, and displays at most 250 results. Copy only the relevant timestamp and description into the test record, and do not interpret an actor label as proof until the related change is verified.
Verify the complete page
Preview the unpublished theme on desktop and mobile. Check the product title, description, images, price, compare-at price if used, variants, inventory message, market and currency, assigned template, accessibility labels, add-to-cart action, cart totals, and links to policy pages. Do not place a real order unless a separately authorized test requires it. Confirm that the live theme and live product remained unchanged during the exercise.
Close the drill with the retained theme copy, catalog checkpoint, exact restored file or field, elapsed time, verifier, failed checks, and corrective actions. A passing code rollback does not prove that catalog, app, or market changes can be recovered; test those layers separately with controls suited to the store.
