Test variants as distinct purchasable combinations, not as one product with a few visual labels. Before publishing, create a matrix of the combinations customers are expected to buy and verify selection, price, availability, cart identity, shipping, and order records for each meaningful case.
Define the variant set
List every option value, such as size, color, material, or pack count, and generate the allowed combinations. Mark combinations that should not exist rather than leaving their behavior ambiguous. Shopify's variant guidance describes a variant as a combination of product options and allows details such as price, inventory, and shipping settings to differ by variant. WooCommerce's variable-product guidance similarly treats variations as individually managed configurations with their own product data.
Add expected values to each matrix row: SKU or identifier, displayed title, image, price, compare-at price if used, available quantity, weight or shipping class, taxable state, fulfillment source, and publication state. Include one sold-out variant, one unavailable combination, and boundary cases such as the lowest and highest price.
Test the product page
Open the product in a private browser session. Choose each important combination and confirm that the URL or page state, image, price, availability message, quantity rules, and add-to-cart state all update correctly. Refresh or share a variant-specific link when the storefront supports it. Confirm that changing one option does not silently reset another.
Test inaccessible or sold-out combinations. The page should not let a customer add a combination that the store cannot fulfill. If backorders or preorders are intentional, verify the exact message and inventory behavior instead of assuming a disabled button is correct.
Test cart and checkout
Add the chosen combination and check that the cart shows the correct option values, quantity, price, image, identifier, discount eligibility, and fulfillment expectations. Continue through checkout with a supported test method. Shopify recommends test orders for checking checkout flow, order processing, inventory, shipping, notifications, and taxes.
For products whose variants differ in weight, shipping class, fulfillment location, or tax handling, include separate checkout rows. Test a mixed cart when variant rules can interact with other items. Keep the expected result beside the observed result so a reviewer can identify the exact failing combination.
Inspect the created order
Confirm that the order contains the intended variant, SKU, option values, charged price, shipping method, tax result, and inventory movement. Check the fulfillment interface as well as the customer confirmation. Then cancel or archive test orders according to the platform's procedure so they do not resemble real demand.
Retest after correction
Fix one configuration layer at a time: product options, variant data, inventory, theme presentation, shipping profile, or extension logic. Repeat the failed row, then rerun representative rows around it. Save the final matrix with the product version or update date. Repeat the test whenever options, pricing, inventory policy, theme code, shipping logic, or checkout extensions change.
