Fast battery drain does not automatically mean the phone is finished. The symptom can come from a busy app, a recent software update, high display use, weak connectivity, or an aging battery. A good decision starts with evidence from the phone and moves from reversible troubleshooting to hardware service.
Repair the cause when battery health is not the main problem
Start in the operating system's battery screen. Apple says the Battery settings page can identify activities and conditions that affect battery life; high brightness is one example, and Low Power Mode reduces or disables some background activities. Google advises Pixel owners to review Battery diagnostics and battery usage, keep Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled, and restrict or uninstall apps that consume unusually high power. Google also notes that temporary extra drain after a software update can be normal while the phone completes background work. See Apple's battery-life guidance and Google's Pixel battery guidance.
That evidence supports a repair path when one app, setting, or recent event explains the change. Update the problem app, correct a runaway background setting, reduce unnecessary display demand, and observe the phone under a normal routine. Change one thing at a time so the result is interpretable. Avoid deleting data or resetting the phone before making a backup and exhausting simpler checks.
Replace the battery when the system reports wear
Batteries are consumable components. Apple provides Battery Health information and says that service or replacement can restore performance and capacity when the battery is significantly degraded. Its battery-life guidance also says to consider battery replacement when Battery Health shows Service. Google says Pixel Battery Health can show Normal or Reduced, and recommends battery replacement when the status is Reduced. See Apple's iPhone battery and performance page and Google's Pixel battery-health page.
A battery replacement is most sensible when the phone otherwise meets your needs: it still receives required updates, its screen and ports work, storage is adequate, and the repair price is reasonable relative to the useful life you expect. Use an authorized or qualified repair route, especially if the device is swollen, unusually hot, damaged, or difficult to open. Google explicitly routes a swollen Pixel battery to repair rather than ordinary troubleshooting.
Retire the phone only after considering the whole device
Retirement is a device-level decision, not a battery symptom. Consider it when the battery is only one of several material failures, the required repair is unavailable or uneconomic, or the phone no longer supports the tasks you need. Back up and verify important data before any trade-in, recycling, or factory reset. Remove account locks and personal data only after confirming the backup can be restored.
A simple decision order
First identify whether drain is tied to an app, setting, update, or usage pattern. Second read the operating system's battery-health result. Third compare a battery replacement with the condition and remaining usefulness of the entire phone. Repair a bounded software or settings cause; replace a worn battery when the rest of the device remains useful; retire the phone when broader limitations make another repair poor value. A single bad day of runtime is not enough evidence by itself.
