Transfer phone storage safely by inventorying what must move, creating a current backup, using a supported migration path, verifying important data on the destination, and keeping the old phone unchanged until acceptance. A setup screen saying complete does not prove that every application, message, credential, or local file transferred.
Inventory data and dependencies
List photos, videos, messages, contacts, calendars, notes, downloads, locally stored documents, authentication tools, health data, recordings, offline media, device settings, and work profiles. Identify items that synchronize through an account, items included in device backup, and items that exist only locally.
Google's Android backup guidance says phone content, data, and settings can be backed up to a Google Account, but not all software can back up or restore every setting and data item. Contact the developer or use its documented export when a critical tool is not fully covered.
Record account owners, recovery methods, subscription status, storage capacity, and required transfer cables or network access. Do not copy passwords into the inventory. Ensure authentication and recovery access will survive before moving the device that currently supplies them.
Create and verify backups
Run the platform backup and wait for it to finish. Check its timestamp and included categories. Apple’s backup-methods guidance explains that iPhone and iPad can use iCloud backups or backups from a computer and that a backup can transfer information to a replacement device. Choose the method that covers the data and recovery situation you need.
Preserve separate exports for critical local files or specialized tools when the main backup does not cover them. Open a sample of photos, documents, and exports from another location. A backup is stronger evidence when a restore or readable sample has been tested.
Keep both phones charged and updated. Confirm sufficient destination space and avoid deleting the source to make the destination appear successful. If the old phone is damaged or managed by an employer, follow the relevant support process before attempting improvised repairs or copies.
Use a supported transfer path
Follow the destination platform's current setup instructions. Apple’s Quick Start guidance says a new iPhone or iPad can download data from iCloud or transfer directly from the previous device. Direct transfer requires waiting for migration on both devices, while an iCloud download can continue in the background.
For Android or a move between platforms, use the vendor's supported migration tool and read its exclusions. Keep devices near power and a stable network when required. Do not bypass account locks or device-management policies. For an ownership transfer, separate personal and business data before migration and obtain authorization for any managed records.
Verify the destination
Check counts and samples instead of only opening the home screen. Verify contacts, message history, recent and old photos, albums, downloads, notes, calendars, offline files, voice recordings, accessibility settings, paired devices, and work data. Sign in to essential tools and confirm that local content, subscriptions, and notifications behave correctly.
Test calls, messages, cellular service, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, camera, microphone, location, backup, and device recovery. Verify authentication tools and backup codes before signing out of the source. Some financial, work, health, or security software may require fresh enrollment.
Record missing items and resolve them while the old device remains available. Compare storage totals carefully because optimization, cloud placeholders, caches, and file formats can make raw numbers differ without proving loss.
Transfer ownership and retire the source
For a new owner, remove payment methods, personal accounts, paired watches, trusted-device status, work profiles, and activation locks through supported settings. Transfer only authorized records. Sign out and erase the old phone only after the destination has passed the checklist and required backups exist.
Document the source, destination, backup date, migration method, verified categories, exceptions, account owner, and erasure confirmation. The transfer is complete when important data and account control work on the destination and the old device no longer exposes the previous owner's information.
