A shared gaming setup needs a baseline, not a single number copied from a product box. Frame rate is produced by the game and device, while the display refreshes at a rate it can accept through a particular port and cable. A useful household or small-team setup records that whole path and gives each user a safe default.

Inventory the signal path

Write down the console or PC, graphics hardware where relevant, display model, HDMI or DisplayPort connection, any receiver or capture device, and the exact input used. Intermediary hardware can limit the signal even when the console and screen each support a higher mode. Sony's PS5 troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends testing a direct connection when diagnosing high-resolution or high-refresh output.

Record the display firmware, system software, cable rating, and whether the input needs an enhanced-signal mode. Do not assume that every port on a television has the same capabilities.

Separate frame rate from refresh rate

Choose a target the game and display both support. A 120 Hz display mode does not guarantee that every game renders 120 frames per second. Sony describes 120 Hz output as available for televisions and games that support it, and its settings expose current output details, resolution, variable refresh rate, and the 120 Hz option. PlayStation's video-output guide provides a concrete example of these dependencies.

Variable refresh rate can help the display follow changing game output when both the screen and the game or platform support the feature. It is still a compatibility setting, not a promise of a fixed frame rate. PlayStation's monitor guidance explains that VRR adjusts the display refresh rate to the connected device's changing output.

Build two named profiles

Create a stability profile first: a widely supported resolution, standard refresh rate, default graphics mode, and no experimental overrides. Then create a performance profile for supported games and displays. Note which settings live in the system menu, which live in the game, and which belong to the display.

For shared equipment, place the profile names and restore steps in a short note near the setup. Users should know how to return to the stability profile if a game shows a blank screen, flicker, audio loss, or unstable performance.

Test one variable at a time

Start from the stability profile and change only the refresh-rate target. Confirm the system reports the intended output, then open a game with a documented high-frame-rate mode. Test a calm scene and a demanding scene, watch for visual or audio interruptions, and restart the game to confirm the setting persists.

If the signal fails, return to the last known-good profile before changing cables, ports, resolution, HDR, VRR, or intermediary devices. Sony's troubleshooting sequence checks display support, firmware, cable capability, direct connection, port selection, and automatic output settings. That order prevents multiple simultaneous changes from hiding the actual cause.

Microsoft's Game Development Kit also documents a platform preference that can prioritize 120 Hz over HDR when a display cannot support both together. Microsoft's display-mode reference reinforces the need to record tradeoffs rather than labeling one profile universally best.

Keep results comparable

Use the same game, scene, camera position, and test duration when comparing changes. Note whether the number comes from an in-game counter, platform overlay, display status screen, or external measurement tool. Those sources can report different layers of the pipeline.

A concise record should include date, game version, device software, resolution, refresh rate, graphics mode, VRR state, HDR state, connection path, observed result, and reviewer. Avoid averaging unrelated games into one score.

Hand off ownership

Name one person who can update the baseline and one who can restore it. Other users may choose a personal game preset, but system-wide changes should be recorded. Recheck after a display firmware update, console update, new cable, receiver change, or major game patch.

The setup is ready when a new user can select the safe profile, verify the active output, run the standard test, and recover from a failed mode without guessing.
