A game update troubleshooting checklist should first identify whether the failure affects a game patch or the console's system software, then check service status, connectivity, storage, and the recorded error. Retry one controlled step at a time, and keep the console powered while an update is installing.
Identify the update and capture the error
Write down the game title, console model, account, update type, error code, and stage where progress stops. A game patch and a system-software update use different repair paths. Check whether other downloads work and whether the publisher or console network reports maintenance.
Confirm free space before repeatedly restarting the download. A displayed download size may not represent all temporary workspace the console needs. If the problem started after moving the game, note its current storage location and whether the drive is still connected.
Retry the normal path safely
Restart the console through its menu, reconnect to a stable network, and resume the download once. If Wi-Fi is unstable and a cable is practical, test a wired connection. Avoid powering off the console while an update is actively installing.
For PS5 system software, Sony's system software guide says to open Downloads and Uploads, select the failed update, view the error, and choose Try Again. If failures continue, the guide provides an official USB update method using a file downloaded from Sony. It also warns that reinstalling system software deletes console data, so reinstallation is not an ordinary retry.
Separate game-specific checks
When the system is current but one game still fails, check the game's service notice, storage location, ownership, and license. PlayStation's game launch troubleshooting steps put restart and license restoration before deleting and downloading the game again. They also recommend moving a PS5 game from USB extended storage to internal storage when launch problems occur.
If a re-download is necessary, verify saved progress first. Deleting an installation is different from deleting saved data, but menu labels vary, so read the confirmation screen carefully. Confirm the purchasing account and subscription are active if the game shows a lock.
Escalate without erasing evidence
Use only the console maker's current update file and documented folder names for an offline update. Record the update version, error code, connection type, free space, and steps already tried before contacting support. This prevents a support case from restarting at guesswork.
Safe Mode and database repair can be appropriate official steps, but choose the exact option described by the maker. Options labeled reset or reinstall may erase data. Back up supported data first and stop if the console shows hardware, overheating, or drive errors that make continued writes risky.
The update is complete only when the version changes, the game launches, and a fresh check shows no pending patch. If the download succeeds but the game still fails, treat that as a separate launch or license issue rather than repeating the update indefinitely.
