Cloud gaming portability has several layers: where you can launch a game, which account proves access, whether the game is purchased or included in a subscription, where progress is stored, and what remains if the streaming service changes. Compare those layers separately. A large device list does not by itself mean that a library or saves are portable.
Draw the ownership stack
For each option, write down five things: the streaming provider, subscription tier, game or catalog entitlement, store or publisher account, and save system. Mark each one as owned, licensed, subscribed, or temporary. Keep receipts and account recovery information under the household's control.
The distinction is visible in current service documentation. Xbox says its cloud service can stream supported free-to-play titles, catalog titles under eligible Game Pass plans, and select cloud-playable games that the user owns or buys. NVIDIA says GeForce NOW connects to supported digital game stores so members can stream supported titles in their existing libraries. In both cases, availability is conditional: the title, account, region, plan, device, and service support still matter.
Test the exact games and devices
Build a small test set instead of comparing catalog totals. Include the household's three most important games, one multiplayer game if relevant, and one title with valuable progress. For each game, record the required store account, subscription, downloadable ownership, supported devices, controller or touch support, and whether add-ons are recognized.
Then run the same launch-and-resume test on every intended device. Xbox lists supported phones, tablets, computers, consoles, televisions, browsers, and other devices, but it also notes that features and availability vary. NVIDIA publishes device-specific system requirements and says peripheral support can differ by platform. Confirm the actual controller, headset, resolution, audio route, and household network rather than relying on a general compatibility logo.
Verify save portability instead of assuming it
Create a harmless checkpoint in a test game, close the stream normally, and open the game through the second intended route. Confirm the correct profile, checkpoint, settings, and downloadable content. Repeat after a forced disconnect so the household knows how a failed sync is presented.
Record where the authoritative save lives and whether the game supports cross-save outside the streaming service. Xbox warns that streamed games can have limited functionality, including cloud-save-only storage. NVIDIA says cloud saves work for supported games and store platforms. Neither statement guarantees that every game will carry progress to every platform. Game-specific support must be checked.
Score account and exit control
Compare each option using evidence the household can retain:
- Game entitlement: Is the title purchased, catalog-only, free-to-play, or provided by another subscription?
- Account dependency: Which service, store, publisher, and family accounts must remain available?
- Save path: Can progress be resumed locally or on another service, or only through one cloud route?
- Device portability: Which exact devices and inputs passed the household test?
- Recovery: Can a second authorized adult recover the account without borrowing one person's phone or email?
- Exit cost: What must be repurchased, downloaded, reconfigured, or abandoned if the subscription ends?
Do not combine these into a single portability score until the household has chosen weights. A family that switches devices frequently may prioritize saves and input compatibility. Someone with limited local storage may accept stronger service dependence.
Keep the decision current
Save a dated matrix, not a permanent verdict. Catalogs, supported devices, subscription tiers, and streaming features change. Recheck the important titles before renewing a long subscription, replacing hardware, or depending on cloud play for travel.
The best fit is the service whose account and entitlement model the household understands, whose critical games and saves pass a real two-device test, and whose exit consequences are acceptable. That is a stronger comparison than counting advertised devices or games.
