Browser profile offboarding should identify which account is signed in, what data is syncing, which devices hold the profile, and what must be preserved before anything is removed. Separate work and personal data, export approved records, turn off sync according to the platform's behavior, remove the local work profile from every reassigned device, and verify the account no longer appears. Deleting while sync is active can affect more than the computer in front of you.
Inventory profiles and devices
On each work computer and mobile device, list browser profiles, signed-in accounts, sync status, and management status. Record synced categories such as bookmarks, history, open tabs, passwords, addresses, extensions, workspaces, and settings. Identify personal accounts accidentally added to a work device and work accounts used on a personal device.
Do not merge profiles as a shortcut. Keep work and personal information separate while deciding what the organization is authorized to retain. Passwords, payment details, and personal history require special care.
Understand local and synced data
Google's Chrome sign-in guidance describes browser information available across devices and provides a separate step to delete saved Chrome information from the Google Account. Google's Chrome profile guidance warns that removing a profile erases its bookmarks, history, passwords, and other settings from that computer.
Microsoft's Edge sync guidance lists synchronized data categories and explains how to sign out and stop syncing. Microsoft also warns that clearing data while signed in and syncing removes it from all synced devices.
Write down which action affects the local profile, the cloud copy, or both. Do not assume that deleting a desktop shortcut, uninstalling the browser, removing one profile, and deleting synced cloud data are equivalent.
Preserve only approved business information
Identify bookmarks, managed passwords, certificates, extensions, or settings that belong to the organization and are needed by a successor. Transfer them through the approved business system rather than exporting an entire mixed profile. Move shared credentials into the company password manager and rotate secrets that were exposed to a departing user.
Do not copy personal browsing history, personal passwords, or autofill records merely because they appear on a company device. Follow the organization's device and privacy process when work and personal data are mixed.
Remove access in a controlled order
Confirm the user can still reach required records through the organization's source systems. Revoke work sessions and account access under the normal offboarding procedure. In the browser, turn off sync or sign out before clearing data when that is the documented path. Remove the local work profile from the device and inspect other profiles for saved work credentials or extensions.
For a reassigned device, also review operating-system accounts, browser management, default profile selection, download folders, and saved site permissions. Browser cleanup is one part of device offboarding, not the entire process.
Verify every surface
Restart the browser and device. Confirm that the former account does not appear, protected work sites require a new sign-in, and no work passwords or history remain in the local profile. Check other assigned devices and mobile browsers, because sync can span multiple endpoints.
Record the device, profiles found, synced categories, preserved business records, removal steps, reviewer, and completion time. If the browser is centrally managed, verify the device and profile state in the administration console as well as on the endpoint.
Repeat this process when a device changes owner, an employee leaves, a browser-management policy changes, or a personal account is discovered on a work device. The goal is a verified separation of accounts and data, not simply an empty browser window.
